My first degree was in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. This was completed in The Department of Computer Science at The University of Birmingham 2003–2006. Although Computer Science fundamentals are covered, there is a stronger focus on AI. During my final year I focussed on machine learning and evolutionary computation, completing modules in subjects such as Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computation and Intelligent Robotics.
Around 2006 EPSRC were a little more liberal with their cash than they are now, and I was able to secure a fully funded scholarship for an MSc course in Natural Computation. That particular degree is similar to doing a (short) MRes, in that is it heavily research based (2/3rds research 1/3rd taught). Taught modules included Neural Networks, Evolutionary Optimisation, and Molecular and Quantum Computation. After completing the course with distinction I began my PhD in 2007.
